This is a seven-level parking structure for 581 cars,
with a total area of approximately 150,000 square feet,
for use by hospital patients, staff, and visitors.
The
Prestressed Group
supplied and installed 2,780 square feet of eight-inch
hollowcore slabs, 304 pretopped double tees,
thirty-seven non-load-bearing spandrels, sixty-four
load-bearing spandrels, one closure spandrel, and
twenty-one columns.
Installation consisted of one move-in, for approximately
eight weeks, and twelve to twenty pieces were set per
day.
The
parking garage consisted of two cast-in-place,
seven-storey high shearwalls at either end of the
structure. The precast components created the diaphragm
tying all components together.
The
spandrels along the exterior long sides were immediately
welded to the columns and/or C.I.P. shearwalls in order
to eliminate the use of numerous bracing devices.
Since Ottawa is in a high seismic zone, the
precast-to-precast and precast-to-c.i.p. connections
were designed to be approximately four times more
stringent than a building in Toronto would be.
All
connections had to be completed immediately after
installation to accommodate the aggressive topping
schedule.
