As a leader in the field of precast/prestressed
concrete, The Prestressed Group takes its responsibility
to the community very seriously. To stimulate and
reward creative thinking and innovative ideas is a
commitment we have made to the future of our
industry. Students of today become candidates for
employment in our industry, or employees of design and
engineering firms responsible for the selection of
building materials.
The Prestressed Group actively
supports various educational initiatives, such as
scholarships for local post-secondary students, hosting
special courses on precast/prestressed concrete, and an
annual plant tour for students. We also have
assisted with, and supported, numerous research projects
for graduate and post-graduate students, and provided support for the annual Big Beam Contest.
Through various industry
associations, our employees are active in providing
seminars for design professionals and customers on the
use of our products and design considerations when using
our products. In most cases, these courses qualify
for continuing education credits for the design
professional.
Engineering
Student Design Contest
(Big Beam Contest)
For several years Prestressed Systems Inc.
has helped students from one or more local universities and colleges
participate in The Big Beam Contest, sponsored by the
Precast Concrete Institute, by supplying facilities,
materials, equipment, and personnel.
The contest challenges students from
engineering schools across North America to design
materials and structure for a 16-foot span precast
concrete inverted tee beam. The projects must adhere to
strict rules on the structural design and what materials
can be used in the concrete mix. Cash prizes are
awarded for the most efficient design, highest load
capacity, best report, and other categories.

National Precast Day
The Prestressed Group has hosted National Precast Day at
their Windsor plant since 1998. This is an annual event
held by CPCI producer members to educate students on the
effectiveness of using precast/prestressed products.
All across Canada CPCI members open their plants to
architectural and engineering students and firms, in
hopes of offering a clearer understanding of how precast/prestressed
products are made and used. The Prestressed Group
typically welcomes approximately 150 students, along
with local architects, to an outdoor BBQ, plant tour,
and informative presentations. We look forward to
educating more students and professionals on the
benefits of using precast/prestressed concrete at the
next annual National Precast Day.
